Most Gator fans know him simply as Mr. Orange and Blue. That has been Johnston’s weekend job at each Florida home game since 1984.

A former UF cheerleader and walk-on swimmer — Johnston swam for Gators coach Gregg Troy’s AAU team in Fort Myers in the late ’70s — he took a test drive as Mr. Orange and Blue in 1980 while attending law school at UF.

On any given fall Saturday during football season, hordes of Gator fans cram their way in to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium to root for the University of Florida players. And, for the last 25 seasons, Fort Myers resident Richard Johnston Jr. has led “The Swamp” cheers as Mr. Orange and Blue.

Leading almost 90,000 Gator fans in pregame chants and cheers may not be a typical hobby, but for Richard Johnston Jr., also known as Mr. Orange and Blue, it is a regular pastime.
